Waves Clarity Vx review: one great knob, one hard sum

An exam paper marked C plus in red pen, with one margin mark per criterion

Pricing verified on waves.com, 2026-09-20

Verdict: C+ (62.0/100). As a piece of audio engineering, Clarity Vx deserves better than its grade: an AI denoiser that runs in real time inside your DAW, operated with one big knob that does what the label says. The grade prices in everything around the knob — it requires a DAW you already drive, and the product page today sells it only inside a rolling Waves subscription. Buy it as a resident of that ecosystem and it delights; arrive from outside and the maths frowns.

What Clarity Vx is

Clarity Vx is Waves' neural denoiser for voice, shipped as a DAW plugin: instantiate it on a vocal track, choose a processing model, and turn the large center knob until the room disappears. Unlike the upload-and-pray services on our board, it runs in real time — you hear the cleanup as you adjust it, automate it across a timeline, and stack it in a chain with your EQ and compressor like any other plugin. A Pro variant offers multiband depth and finer surgery for post-production work.

That real-time, in-chain nature is why editors love it and why our workflow criterion cannot: everything about Clarity Vx assumes you already live in a session. There is no drag-a-file-here page; the DAW is the price of admission before any invoice arrives.

Where the points came from

Scope — 3.0/5

Documented job: remove background noise from vocals and voice, with model choices tuned for different material, and the Pro tier reaching further into post territory. No leveling, no loudness, no music-bed unmixing claims. It is one excellent link in a chain — the rubric scores the chain-link honestly.

Control — 3.5/5

The best control-to-simplicity ratio in the C range. One knob is not a euphemism for no choices here: the knob is a genuine strength control — the thing we keep demanding from one-button tools — plus model selection, and real-time preview by definition. Pro adds multiband control that would score higher still. It stops short of the leaders because the base plugin's decisions beyond strength remain coarse.

Workflow — 3.0/5

If you have a DAW: lovely — real-time, automatable, chainable. If you do not: a wall. We grade for the general reader, and the general reader with one noisy recording should not be told to learn session management first. The score is the average of those two truths.

Value — 3.0/5

Verified 2026-09-20 on the product page: Clarity Vx is offered inside Waves Essential at $14.99/month or $149.99/year, or Ultimate at $24.99/month ($249.99/year), alongside the rest of those bundles. For someone who wants precisely one denoise knob, a rolling subscription is the least attractive pricing shape on our board — worse per year than LALAL.AI's $50 pack, worse at rest than RX Elements' $99 perpetual. For someone using twenty plugins from the bundle, the same numbers are excellent; that reader should mentally add a point.

Transparency — 3.0/5

The subscription placement is stated plainly — credit for that. The deduction: whether Clarity Vx can still be owned outright is simply not answered on its product page, and a buyer deciding between renting and owning deserves that sentence. A sale banner advertising unrelated $29.99 plugins on the same page does not settle it. When the page answers the question, the point returns.

Who it is for

  • DAW residents with a Waves subscription: instantiate it tonight; it may be the best single voice-cleanup value you already pay for.
  • Editors doing repeat spoken-word work in sessions: real-time strength control beats every upload service for iteration speed.
  • Not for the one-file rescue: a web one-shot gets there with no DAW and no subscription.
  • Not as a finisher: pair with leveling/loudness — in a DAW you have those tools an insert away, which is rather the point of living there.

Credit where due

  • Real-time processing with a true strength knob
  • Automatable, chainable, session-native
  • Model choices; Pro variant for deeper surgery
  • Excellent value if the bundle earns its keep anyway

Points deducted

  • DAW required — no standalone or web path
  • Subscription-only placement on today's product page
  • Perpetual-ownership question left unanswered there
  • Noise only; no leveling or loudness scope

To raise the grade

One sentence on the product page — "buy Clarity Vx outright for $X" — would restore a transparency point and rewrite the value conversation, plausibly landing a B−. The knob already did its homework; the storefront owes the rest.
